Description

For *ElysianSkies's contest. The challenge was to take a movie costume and make it our own. I chose the costume that Colin Farrell wore as Alexander the great in the movie Alexander. I've never seen the film, buuuut, I heard it was terrible. XD

Little do many people know, Alexander the Great was from Macedonia, not Rome. But surprise, not much is to be found about ancient Macedonian fashion, so I based things off of Roman miliaty designs, as they are somewhat similar.

The skirt is made out of what is called lorica squamata--a type of scale armor used by the Roman army. This particular model is crafted out of bronze, and layered in long, beveled scales. The skirt is high-waisted, being broown leather at the top with stamped leather stripe detailing on the back and sides. The front has four square buttons, which are enlarged at center.

The jacket is a five-buttoned, partially double-breasted design made of beige brushed cotton. It features dark brown border accents along with a gold and silk damask inner lining. This lining can be further seen on the exterior by rolling up the jacket's quarter sleeves. The back feature a leather-stamped aquila, which is Latin for "eagle". The aquila became the standard symbol of each legion in the Roman army in 104 BC. On the aquila panels there are four square buttons on each side, which are also used on the shoulders. The panels are secured in a flat position with leather thongs tied to metal rings similar to door knockers.

Traditionally, military sandals in Rome were referred to caligae. I made them into a heel and put belt straps on the leg for a more modern look. The shoes are made mostly from a wam brown leather.

Accessiories include modern versions of armillae--gold cuffs used by the Roman army as military decorations when a soldier is said to have displayed "conspicuous valor...which deserves commendation". Optionally available to wear is a silk scarf made from the same red and gold damask as the jacket lining to resemble a traditional sagum, a war garment that is similar to a large red scarf. To secure the sagum, a circular bronze fibula (brooch) would be used, pictured center.

I chose some Asian motifs, such as a mandarin collar because Alexander the Great was awesome and conquered territories outside of Europe, even parts of Asia. In the movie his costume reflects that and changes with each region he goes to.

Also, I apologize if this is late by contest standards. You said that it was due on the twelfth, but no specific time was indicated. I assure you, though, this was posted before midnight in my time zone--AKDT. :)
